Juan Manuel Burgos Wine
Since the 2000 vintage, Juan
Manuel Burgos has been producing
his AVAN wines in the Castilian
town of Fuentelcesped, Ribera del
Duero and has established himself
well as a small premium supplier.
With total production currently still
under 100,000 bottles, the quality
has always been pleasing to date.
Juanma, as he is called, began his
winemaking career at Felix Lorenzo
Cachazo in Rueda, where he
worked for a few years before
joining the Cachopa winery in
Ribera del Duero. When his family
provided him with 40 to 100-year-
old Tempranillo vineyards, he
began to create his own wine:
Avan. The grapes are carefully
selected before they are further
processed in our own winery (since
2005). In the cellar, gravity
technology is used, i.e. the grape
must is not pumped, but rather
transported into the stainless steel
tanks from above using a crane.
The small conical stainless steel
tanks are custom-made, like those
used by Mariano Garcia at Aalto.
Juan Manuel Burgos' range
consists of pure Tempranillo wines:
the Avan Nacimiento, which is
made from younger vines, as well
as the Avan Concentracion, which
is made from 40-80 year old vines,
the Avan Valhernando, which is
made from the best parcel of the
Concentracion ( 80 years) in an
edition of only 1,800 bottles, the
single vineyard Viñedo de Torrubio
and the Avan Cepas Centenarias,
an extract from over 100-year-old
vines with a production quantity of
only 1,000 bottles. |
