The Langmeil property was first settled in 1842 by a pioneering settler Christian Auricht and formed one of the district's first villages. Auricht migrated from Prussia after being persecuted for his religious beliefs, and fled to the Barossa for religious freedom. His legacy survives through what's believed to be the oldest known surviving Shiraz vineyard in the world, planted in 1843 by Auricht and today continues to produce fruit for the flagship single vineyard wine The Freedom Shiraz.
